About

Sue is a contemporary artist from Yorkshire and has been painting for over 30 years. Gaining a Diploma in Fine Art and Crafts at Leeds College of Art, then going on to complete a BA Honours Degree in Art and Design at Bradford College. Primarily Sue use oil paint, to draw out intangible moments from specific memories. Areas of impasto layering is a striking feature of her work.

A personal life long ambition was realised when I first began to paint, and reminiscence has been the main driving force within my studio practice, ever since. I attempt to re-visit specific moments from the past in paint, building and layering the colour until a sort of compromise is met between the remembered ‘moment’ and the painted image in front of me.

I’m not looking for literal translations, as I realise there is no precise formula for memory’s understanding, and therefore the complexities of remembering can only be an individual experience, my own short term memory for instance has always been erratic, whilst my long term reminiscences can be vividly detailed.

Art practice for me is an exploration into reminiscence and the problematics that surround it.
